Dr. James Payne designed and built his beautiful Santa Fe/Southwestern style building in 1996. The office was planned from the beginning to be dedicated solely to the care of plastic surgery patients. Over the years since it was opened we have had regular inquiries from architects and other physicians expressing an interest in duplicating many of our office features for their own purposes.

When you arrive for your first visit you will enter a warm, open, beautifully lit waiting room adjoining an indoor garden with a water sculpture. In the winter we have a fireplace with gas flame for warmth and ambience. Our reception area is integrated nicely into the waiting area for easy access and a friendly atmosphere. The waiting area has a large vaulted ceiling with rough hewn logs giving it an elegant but comfortable feel.

Once you have made your initial appointment to see Dr. Payne for a consultation you will be provided multiple brochures and other information preparing you for this visit. You may choose to have a digital image recorded prior to your visit with Dr. Payne. His office staff will arrange this for you. He will review this image and then have his staff communicate to you what treatment might be best for you along with a fee quote. The final details of the anticipated procedure, however, will be worked out with each patient at the consultation. Dr. Payne is very thorough and he will take a detailed history and perform a physical exam on you. He will address all of your concerns and make sure to answer all of your questions. He will discuss the pros and cons of what you are interested in pursuing. He will give you a complete informed consent discussing all relevant matters both short and long term with you. You may view Before and After photos if you like. You may have a preview of your possible result using our Patient Imaging System. This will be discussed with you at the time your consultation appointment is being made. We do require patients over 40 years of age to obtain clearance for surgery from their primary care doctor. We usually will need some laboratory tests done ahead of time as well. All of these issues will be coordinated through our office for you.

We have a number of options available for patients from out of town which will help make their plastic surgery experience more convenient and easy. We can recommend nearby hotels and restaurants. We will provide maps of the area with directions to a given location. We can help with recommendations regarding nearby airports and airlines. If the patient so desires we can arrange for a qualified caregiver to stay with them for a specified length of time. This caregiver will supervise all of the detailed postoperative instructions, help with meals and transportation, and be on-site with the patient helping them 24 hours per day until the patient is ready to go home or hand off care to a family member or friend.

These additional services do add extra expense to the cost of the treatment but for many clients this extra help is invaluable. Dr. Payne calls each patient and their caregiver postoperatively the evening of surgery and the next morning. He and his staff are available 24 hours per day 7 days per week. They can be reached by dialing the office number (209-524-9904) or the Medical Exchange (209-577-1040). He had admitting privileges at two nearby top notch hospitals. He frequently sees patients in his office on Saturday and Sundays.

Surgery Center

About half the office is devoted to our Pueblo Nuevo Surgery Center and the rest is used for clinic purposes and our Laser and Skin Care Center. The Surgery Center is MediCare and State of California licensed (the highest level of accreditation that can be achieved). It is modern, meticulously clean, and maintained to a very high standard. All of the usual safety features are present and our staff is very experienced and trained expressly for the purpose of taking care of our plastic surgery clients. We perform most of our operations under general anesthesia (the patient is fully asleep) although sometimes we will use local anesthesia with or without intravenous sedation. We have one on one nursing care in the Recovery Room after the patient’s surgery has been completed. Usually most patients will spend another 1-2 hours with us waking up before being discharged to home or a nearby hotel.

We have a perfect safety record with our Pueblo Nuevo Surgery Center. We have never had a death or significant patient injury despite having operated on thousands of patients since we opened. All operations have gone forward to their planned conclusion without the need to ever stop a procedure short of being finished. We have not had any significant anesthesia related problems. We have very low levels of postoperative nausea and vomiting. We do an excellent job providing pain relief in the postoperative period. Dr. Payne calls every patient the night of surgery to check on them and make sure their caregivers are doing a good job following detailed postoperative instructions. The morning following surgery we will call again to check once more. The patient may reach Dr. Payne 24 hours per day 7 days per week by simply dialing the office number (209-524-9904) or by calling the Medical Exchange directly (209-577-1040) in the event they have a problem or question.

The patients are seen frequently after surgery. This can vary from a daily visit to 1 or 2 visits per week. We follow all our patients till they are stable, well healed, comfortable, and satisfied with their results. Some patients may be asked to return for a visit at 1 year postoperatively so that their overall status and result can be evaluated. If any revision treatment including surgery is necessary this will be done at significantly reduced fees with every effort made to contain this additional expense on the part of the patient.

Laser and Skin Care Medispa
